Heavy rainfall is one of the most frequent and widespread hazards to affect New Zealand. It is defined a rainfall greater than 100mm in 24 hours.
NIWA scientists are working on improving hazard mitigation and increasing society's resilience to hazards such as heavy rainfall. They are developing and applying improved weather prediction models to accurately forecast severe events in New Zealand.

Hi Rebecca, heavy rainfalls contribute a lot in a country's hazard. Pakistan is also vulnerable to extreme rainfalls especially rising in the last decade. About 60% of the area of Pakistan receives less than 250mm of rainfall/year and 24% receives between 250-500mm. Its rivers are predominantly fed by the Hindu Kush-Karakoram Himalayan glaciers which are reported to be receding rapidly due to global warming; hence more floods.

Hi Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteNew Zealand is a country that has always fascinated me (I blame Lord of the Rings lol). I think it is such a beautiful country in so many ways, but I especially love the green mountains and hills. So learning about the rainfall pattern in this country does not come as a shock to me. You need heavy rainfall to get such green beauty! Great Post!
Hi,
ReplyDeletefirst , nothing wrong with liking the lord of the rings (:
second, yes, most of you are choosing flooding/heavy rain as you r hazard...the rainy season can be really strong and getting stronger!.
